This woman is Isatu Mansaray, a 30 years old patient at LHMC. On the 29th of September she was referred from Baomahun village to our hospital because of a big swelling in the low jaw going all the way down to the neck. After lab investigation, she was diagnosed with Dental Abscess, a problem we see often because of a lack of dental healthcare. When a small tooth infection is neglected, it grows bigger and bigger, with the infection finally spreading outside of the mouth and becoming very dangerous. By the time people come to the hospital it is often too late and they do not survive.
Isatu was quickly taken to the Operation Theatre, where the surgeons removed the infected tissues and deeply cleaned the wounds. Since then, the wound has been cleaned every day. Isatu is starting to do better now. She is stable and the swelling has reduced. We hope she can soon go home to her children! It was not easy for Isatu to leave them behind, especially her youngest of only three years old.
