How to recognize an hernia:

  • The swelling becomes more visible when you stand, strain or cough.

  • The swelling sometimes extends to the labia or scrotum.

  • In people with more abdominal fat, the hernia may be less visible.

  • The hernia feels painful or burning/stabbing.

  • It is also possible that you feel the swelling, but have no pain. You may also have the feeling that something is ‘in the way’ in the groin.

  • It can also happen that you feel pain, but do not see swelling. This can occur especially in women.

One of the most important external symptoms of an hernia is a lump or swelling in the groin. An hernia without swelling can also occur. Often there is a painful or burning sensation.

The main symptoms of an hernia are:

1: Swelling in the groin area

2: The swelling bulges further when coughing, lifting or straining

3: Swelling feels painful or burning

The main causes of an hernia in a row

Coughing

Frequent coughing – for example due to a lung condition or smoking – is a common cause of a weakened abdominal wall and therefore an hernia.

Coughing causes pressure and tension on the abdominal wall. In combination with a weakening of muscles and connective tissue, this can eventually lead to a thinner abdominal wall and therefore a chance of an hernia.

Lifting

Heavy physical work (lifting) puts extra pressure on the abdominal wall and can eventually cause an hernia.

Also, an existing hernia can be aggravated by heavy lifting. For this reason, hernias are often first noticed during heavy physical labor.

Presses

During bowel movements, pressure is created on the abdominal wall due to straining.

With normal bowel movements, this pressure has no consequences. With long-term constipation, the consequences can be greater: pressure is created on the abdominal wall for a longer period of time. The intestine is then not closed properly at a weak spot and the hernia occurs. Heavy lifting can be a cause of an hernia.

Is an hernia hereditary?

One person is more prone to an hernia than another. The exact cause of this predisposition is not yet known. Hernias seem to occur more often in one family than in another, but scientific research has not yet proven that a hernia is hereditary.

Facts about hernias

  • An hernia is more common in men than in women.

  • Most hernias occur in people in their fifties.

  • Hernias are not dangerous in principle.

Is an hernia dangerous?

An hernia is very annoying and troublesome, but is not dangerous in principle. Only when the intestine becomes trapped is acute intervention necessary. In the case of an hernia, a weak spot in the abdominal wall causes part of the intestine to bulge out. The condition can best be compared to an overinflated balloon: a bulge forms at the point of least resistance, because the air presses against the plastic.

The consequences of an hernia

Some hernias go unnoticed for years. Other hernias can feel annoying or even painful. Untreated hernias can get worse. What starts out as a mild hernia can become painful over time. Usually, it is not harmful to walk around with an hernia for a while. But there are exceptions: in a few cases, an hernia can be dangerous. This happens when the intestine starts to get pinched. In such a case, you will notice acute serious symptoms and it is important to contact your GP or the GP post immediately.
