Spread the love

In the month of September the Lion Heart Medical Centre welcomed Dr. Danique, who travelled from Holland to train us on ETAT (Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment). ETAT is a course that specifically focuses on children between the ages of 0-5 years. The training lasts for a period of one month and the purpose is for all staff of LHMC to be able to assess, diagnose and treat diseases that can easily be fatal for children under the age of five. Most important is to be able to quickly recognize very ill children from stable children so that those who need emergency treatment can be seen as soon as possible.

In ETAT we have three parameters (1) Emergency signs that point to life threatening conditions and if not immediately treated cause death: difficult breathing, shock, convulsions, and unconsciousness. (2) Priority signs these are commonly seen in children that need to be in front of queue, because if not treated early they will lead to emergency: high fever, tiny babies, vomiting, and trauma. (3) Non-priority these signs that are commonly seen in stable children.

The most interesting part was that people who are non-medical staffs also received training on this course so they can help recognize emergency signs inside and outside the hospital. For example if a child is convulsing and the mother brought him or her through the hospital gate the security will know that this is an emergency sign and he/she needs to quickly call the nurse so that this child will be attended to immediately.

Both the medical and non-medical trainings were very interactive, with scenarios and a quiz competition at the end of the training to test the knowledge of the trainees. Everyone received a certificate at the end of the training and we are happy about that!
