From the start the ultimate goal has been the transfer of the hospital to Sierra Leone. As we announced in previous newsletters the establishment of a local NGO is being prepared to enable this. The NGO will be a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG). The CLG will be administrated by a Board of Directors, consisting of executive and non-executive members.
Anticipating the CLG we now take an interim-step within the current LHMC governance structure. We decided to establish a Supervisory Board (SB) within LHMC, chaired by Professor Fofanah (currently Chairman of the Advisory Board), with immediate effect. The members of the Supervisory Board will comprise the same people as the members of the Board of Directors when the CLG has been established. At that moment we can end the Supervisory Board and replace this body by the Board of Directors. The Supervisory Board will function based upon a ‘Charter of the LHMC Supervisory Board’.
We decided to take this interim-step because the establishment of a CLG appears to be a difficult process. By creating the SB now we like to accelerate developments, to improve the supervision locally and to create more support for Professor Fofanah. These decisions mean that we ended the current Advisory Board.
The new Supervisory Board will have a first meeting at April 7, 2026. The members are Professor Fofanah, the District Medical Officer, the District Council Chairman, the Paramount Chief, an accountant and a legal officer. All members confirmed they are willing to take a seat.
