This is Aminata Kamara, a 60 year old woman from Mabarr Poli village about 20 km from Yele. She was trying to jump over a gutter, when she fell and sustained fractures on both bones of her lower leg & her right foot. Miss Kamara came to our hospital on 10 November 2024, and we immediately did X-rays for her. The next day she was taken to the operation theatre, where the surgical team performed surgery to reposition the bones and then put iron bars to keep the bones steady in the right place. This is called an external fixator. It might seem a bit scary, but it’s the best chance for the bones to heal correctly and for her to walk again. It takes a few weeks before she can start to practice walking and 6 weeks before the external fixator can safely be removed.
